CHARLES WITHELL.

The death is announced, at an advanced age, of Mr. Charles Withell, for some years a resident of New Brighton, and formerly of Brookside. The late Mr. Withell was born in Yorkshire in 1837, and in his youth followed the occupation of farming. He came to New Zealand by the ship Allmore in 1857. His first home was in the North Island, but later moved south, taking up his residency at Riccarton. In Canterbury he continued to follow farming pursuits with a great deal of success, and ultimately took up his residence at Brookside, where he remained till he finally retired from active work. Since he took up his residence at New Brighton he for some time occupied a seat on the Borough Council, where his advice was always found of great assistance. He took keen interest in local organization and was a good friend to the Fire Brigade and always subscribed liberally to the funds of the annual gala, Red ' Cross, and other worthy objects, and his going will be very greatly missed. He was a. prominent member of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association, a noted breeder of Lincoln sheep, and a successful prize taker at the various shows. As a judge of sheep his services were in constant demand. He was for many years a member of the Brookside School Committee. The old homestead, " Raynell," Brookside, is now carried on by one of the sons. Mr. A. E. Withell, who maintains the excellence of the flocks that his father took such pride in. He leaves a widow, four sons and five daughters to mourn their loss—Mr J. Withell, of Wairoa. Hawke's Bay and Timaru; Mr. W. Withell, Shirley: Mr. T, G Withell, of Papanui and " Langridge." Blenheim; and Mr. A. E. Withell, at the old homestead: Mrs. W. Chamberlain, Eliesmere; Mrs. Dighly. Ashburton; Mrs. Mansell, Leeston; Mrs. Ashwin, Australia; Mrs. T. Irvine, Fendalton; Mrs Vaughan. Shirley; Mrs J. Brooks, of Brookside: Mrs J. Kibblewhite, who predeceased her father some six years; and Mrs. F. Kibblewhite.
