Up until the 1930s, the 10-metre high Garden Place Hill was a prominent landmark in central Hamilton. The hill was literally named after the place where the garden was for Kirikiriroa Pā. In 1939, the Hamilton Borough Council let a contract for the removal of the hill. The successful applicants, Grinter Bros., purchased a fleet of new Ford trucks for the work. Work was scheduled to be in progress 24 hours per day. The project cost more than $178,000 for the disposal of over 330,000 cubic yards of soil.
