BASSETT - The funeral for Charlie Elkanah Cannaday, 87, of Rt. 2 (the Blackberry community) Bassett, who died Thursday, Oct. 12, was conducted Sunday, Oct. 15 at Collins Funeral Services by Elder Leonard Brammer. Burial was in Blackberry Baptist Church Cemetery.
He was born in Henry County March 25, 1908, son of the late Stephen Harden and Hattie Sue Stone Cannaday. Also preceding him in death were his wife, Sally Emma Thompson Cannaday, who died in 1994; a daughter, Betty Sue Cannaday; a son, Bunyan A. Cannaday; three sisters, Mae McGuire, Lalah Nolen and Maude Hollandsworth; and five brothers, Roy Lee Cannaday, George Henry Cannaday, Walter Leonard Cannaday, Steve Allen Cannaday and John Earl Cannaday.
He was retired from Fieldcrest Mills with 19 years of service and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. William (Inza) Belcher and Mrs. Jack (Faye) Handy, both of Bassett; five sons, Euell N. Cannaday of Patrick Springs and Charles S. Cannaday, Edward Leon Cannaday, Joel M. Cannaday and Paul Lee Cannaday, all of Bassett; 13 grandchildren; 20great grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Thompson of Bassett and Fern Sink of Ferrum; and two brothers, Daniel Albert (Preacher) Cannaday and Joseph Gray Cannaday, both of Bassett.
Collins Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.
