GEDCOM Note

Our maternal grandmother was raised a Quaker but turned Baptist when she married our Grandfather Colyer. Grandma Colyer was about five feet, five inches tall, a trim, erect figure with brown hair parted in the middle and worn sleekly against her head. Her eyes were a blue-gray. She bore grandfather twelve children, ten of which she raised. And though she had poor health throughout most of her life, her ever ready and willing spirit made up for her weak body. She was always ready to go to the aid of the sick, dress and lay out the dead. She, along with Grandfather Colyer, was always on hand to comfort the bereaved, to 'sit out the death wake'. The dead, in those days, were not taken to a mortuary, but were 'dressed' and 'laid out' in the best room of the house. The dead were never left alone, someone always 'sat' with them until time of burial. Burial took place as soon as possible after death, for the hot, humid weather of Missouri (especially in the summer time) was an element to be reckoned with. We might mention here that Grandma was nigh famous for the delicious corn bread and 'salt rising' bread which she could turn out, and no visitor ever left that house hungry. Grandmother Colyer believed in discipline for her children; she believed that there was only one way to live, and that was by the Good Book, veering neither to the right nor the left. She was a good woman and tried to bring up her children 'in the way that they should go'. Truly she was an example of a 'good neighbor'. Elsie J. Cummings and Wavie J. Charlton, "Survival Pioneer Indian and Wilderness Lore," 1971
