About Charlotte Kuckler
James J. Van Hare, MD, writes:
My grandmother Charlotte Preiss Kuckler spent her last years as a widow on Welfare Island, later Roosevelt Island -- I recall going as a little kid with my mother and my Aunt Gussie to visit her there -- I hated that place. She went there after living briefly with us in the apartment on 10 Sackman St, Brooklyn, NY -- my recollection was that my brothers and I did not like her, and that she dominated my mother and talked her into giving money to Emma and Gussie's families during the Great Depression. I suspect that finding out he was supporting two other families as well as his own was the last straw for my father. Anyway, Grandma moved out -- perhaps to another daughter's home or more likely directly to Welfare Island.
