Our Grandmother Chava was born to a wealthy (lumberyards, forestry & construction) family called Pachter (I think). When it was her turn to marry her father went to the head of the local Yeshiva asked who his brightest student was (it was our Grandfather) offered a substantial dowry (it included 17 years of subsidized i.e. paid for, living) while the Zeida finished his schooling and his early years as a small town Rabbi.
Bubba Chava was mostly deaf (you had to scream into her ear) and suffered from the "vapours" all her life. I remember her getting up in the morning and then spending the rest of the day on the couch in the reception room. Her daughter Edith used to go there every Thursday to clean the house and cook for the week.
