About Chief Wahunsonacock Powhatan

Powhatan (c. 1547 – c. 1618), whose proper name was Wahunsenacawh (alternately spelled Wahunsenacah, Wahunsunacock or Wahunsonacock), was the leader of the Powhatan, an alliance of Algonquian-speaking Native Americans living in Tsenacommacah, in the Tidewater region of Virginia at the time when English settlers landed at Jamestown in 1607.

Powhatan Chief - Father of Pocahontas (Amonute). Known to had have 100 wives. Was the chief of 30 tribes - totaling about 20,000 people. From Virginia area. He died 1 year after his daughter's death. "Pocahontas".

Tribes associated with Powhatan

Powhatan gained control of six tribes when he became chief. He inherited them from his father, whose name is unknown.

Those six tribes included:
