About Christiaan Willem Hendrik Van Der Post, b1
Lid en ook voorzitter van de Vrystaatse Volksraad. Kommandant 1899-1902 en Parlementslid 1908-1910
Christiaan Willem Hendrik van der Post was born in Leiden, Holland, on 26 March 1856. He was the son of Hendrik Pieter van der Post and Elizabeth Guillaurriette Paulina Zaalberg. They emigrated to the Cape in 1859, when CWH van der Post was only three years old.
After a short stay in Cape Town, the family moved to Montagu. His father was the bank manager, although he later had to retire from his post, due to poor health. They then went to live in Ladismith (Cape). Hendrik’s illness worsened, and the family declined into poverty. At this stage, Christiaan was fifteen years old. His parents, who were both well educated, did everything in their power to give him a good education. He benefited from the assistance of Rev D van Velden, who lent him books and discussed the contents with him. Van der Post’s career as teacher began on 26 March 1871, when a family friend took him on as a private teacher for his children. In the meantime, he also studied further, and obtained the Teaching Certificate of the Cape Colony.
