CHRISTIAN CHRISTIANSEN (DØLBY)

(This life sketch was found among Hazel Barker Bott’s family history work. The author’s name is not known. Christian Christensen’s and Anna Marie Christensen’s youngest son was christened Christen Christiansen. Later he became known as Christian Christiansen. This was his older brother’s name. His older brother was injured by a mob on his way west and died on the journey to the Salt Lake Valley.)

Christian Christiansen Dalby was born 7 October 1824 in Dolby Parish near Skive Salling, Viborg Amt., Denmark; son of Christian Christiansen and Anna Marie Christensen, joined the Baptist Church in 1849, and served in the Danish-Prussian War of 1848. It was during his army service that he was given the name of Dalby to distinguish him from other soldiers having the same name, after his discharge from the army he resumed the name of Christiansen but his descendants later adopted the name Dalby.

Six weeks after the first Mormon Missionaries came to Denmark under the leadership of Erastus Snow, he was baptized 17 August 1880 by Elder George P. Dykes. When the first Branch of the Church was organized in Scandinavia, 15 September 1850, he was sustained as Treasurer. He was ordained a Teacher 22 September 1850 by Elder Erastus Snow in Copenhagen; and a Priest 13 October 1850. He was appointed President over the Copenhagen Branch 14 October 1850 and on the same day was married to Hedwig Bruun by Elder Erastus Snow. This was the first Mormon Couple married in Denmark.

He was the first man to receive the Melchizedek Priesthood in Scandinavia being ordained to the office of an Elder 1 January 1851, by Erastus Snow. Early in the year 1851, he was made President of the Ålborg Conference, being the first president of that conference. He was a very successful missionary converting many to the Church among which were his father, mother, brothers and sisters.

He came to Utah in 1853. The next year he was ordained a Seventy and sent on a mission to the Western States and labored principally in Saint Louis, Missouri. Here he labored with Parley P. Pratt during the last days of that great leader’s life before his assassination 13 May 1857.

He returned from his mission as captain of a Company of handcart saints from Scandinavia. The Company consisted of 330 souls, 68 handcarts, 3 wagons and ten mules. They left Florence 7 July 1857 and reached Salt Lake City 13 September 1857. His wonderful success in this great undertaking was one of his crowning achievements.

He settled first in Nephi and then Ephraim. He married Ana Marie Jensen, daughter of Christian and Mariane (Mary Ann) Olsen Jensen 2 May 1868. To this couple two sons were born; Ezra, born in Ephraim 24 March 1869 and Oliver, born in Levan 11 November 1871.

In 1865-1867, he filled another mission to Denmark and was Traveling Elder much of the time. He was very successful in bringing converts to the Church while on this mission.

He was called to help settle Levan, a new settlement in Juab County, in 1868 and moved there shortly after. He was very active in Church and Civic affairs in the new community. He was called as a Counselor to President Samuel Pitchforth when the Branch Conference was called 3 May 1869. He served with President Pitchforth until the president was released in 1872 and Christian was made a counselor to Elmer Taylor who was appointed as Branch President, and served with him until 9 October 1876, when President Taylor was released. He then was chosen to take charge of the Branch which he did until it was made a Ward on 1 July 1877.

While serving with President Pitchforth, he along with the president sent a congratulatory message to President Brigham Young when the Deseret Telegraph Company opened an office in Levan on 11 August 1870. On 18 July 1876, he assisted President Elmer Taylor organize the Young Men’s Mutual Association. He also assisted in setting up the United Order in the Branch during his serving with President Taylor. He served on a committee which supervised the construction of the first meeting house in the community during the year 1869.

He was chosen as Superintendent of the Levan Ward Sunday School in 1879, with William Tunbridge and Seth Ollerton as Counselors. Eliza Curtis was Secretary and Martin Nielsen Librarian.

He filled another Mission to Denmark 1884-1885 and presided over the Århus Conference. When the Manti Temple was completed in 1888, he moved to Manti and labored in the Temple.
