About Christian Corbin

Evidence needed to support Christian Corbin as daughter of John Holland & Agnes Holland. (Probably) not the same as Christian Holland.

Christian was born circa 1576 in England. She married 1) Edward Sprague (1576-1614) in Dorset, England and m2. John Corbin of Upway in 1614.

Edward Sprague, a fuller by trade, died in 1614 leaving behind 6 children and a widow. In 1629, 3 sons migrated to America. Three sons of Edward Sprague (1576-1614) migrated in 1629, Ralph (29), Richard (24), William (20), sailing from England and landing in Salem, Massachusetts and in the summer of that year moving to Charlestown, where they with a few others were the first to form and English Settlement. William in 1635 married Milicen Eames, and in 1636 removed to Hingham where they had 11 children.

6 children of Christian and Edward Sprague were:

  1. Alice Sprague (1592-1668). Married 1) Richard Eames 2) John Holland.
  2. Ralph Sprague (1599-1650) - migrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony in early 1630. Married Joanna Warren.
  3. Edward Spargue (1601- ). Married unknown.
  4. Richard Sprague (1604-1668) - migrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony in early 1630. Married Mary.
  5. Christopher Sprague (1607-1625). Married Ann Grey (disputed)
  6. William Sprague (1609-1675) - migrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony in early 1630. Married Millicent Eames.

In Prince's "Chronology" we find the following "Among those who arrived at Naumkeag are Ralph Sprague, with his brothers Richard and William, who were employed by Governor Endicott to explore and take possession of the country west ward. They traveled through the woods to Charleston, on a neck of land called Michawum, between Mystic and Charles rivers, full of Indians named Aborginians, with who they made peace."

Origins

Seen as “daughter of John Holland (1556-1610) and Agnes Rolleston (1549-1616) and died 25 March 1651 Upway, Dorsetshire, England of unspecified causes.”

The Great Migration Begins Project has no maiden name for her.

Note: “ Bartelot speculates further that Christian was a sister to John Holland of Tincleton. Since Edward Sprague III married John Holland’s daughter Elizabeth in Tincleton 31 Jan. 1651, this would lead to the awkward conclusion that Christian’s grandson married her niece.”

Ralph Sprague's younger brother Edward remained at Upwey with his Mother Christian, who later married John Corben.

Will and Inventory

Edward Sprague wrote his will on the 6th June 1614, probate was granted to his wife Christian on 13th October of that year. In his will, he mentions 6 children. His wife was to receive all his goods after legacies to his children.

  • Ralph the eldest who received two pairs of shears
  • Alice, who received fifty pounds
  • Edward, two pairs of shears and twenty pounds
  • Richard, twenty pounds at the age of 21
  • Christopher, twenty pounds at the age of 21
  • William , twenty pounds at the age of 21

The estate was inherited by Ralph, and a memorandum to the will shows he also was under 21 " whereas the living of the aforesaid Edward Sprague doth fall unto his sonne [son] Ralph Sprague after his decease the said Ralph Sprague doth upon his fathers request promise that his mother Christian Sprague shall quietly enjoy the said living until he shall be one and twenty years of age."[4]

The inventory appended to the will included, 4 beds and ten pairs of sheets, 13 silver spoons, various pewter vessels, candlesticks and salts, a table board and table covers, 4 coffers,1 chest and 2 chairs, brass vessels and iron implements His livestock including 80 sheep, 42 lambs, 10 cows, a pig and a horse together with four and a half acres of corn. His goods were apprised at a total value of £158 6s.[5]

Taken from "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register", Volume CXXXII: January 1978, pages 51-53, published by The New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, 1978

  • That Ralph, Richard, and William Sprague were the sons of Edward Sprague, fuller, of Upway, Dorset, England, is evident from the latter’s will dated 6 June 1614 and proved 13 October 1614 (Prerogative Court of Canterbury), in which the following are mentioned: "Ralphe Sprague my eldest sonne," "my eldest daughter Alice Sprague," "Edward Sprague my second sonne," "Richard Sprague my third sonne," "Crofer (Christopher) Sprague my fowrth sonne," "William Sprague my youngest sonne," and "Christian Sprague my wife."3
  • An error made in the translating of this will’s probate record in 1902 led A.B.R. Sprague and others to perpetuate the name of Edward’s wife as Christiana, though she is twice called Christian in the will (see A.B.R. Sprague, Genealogy (In Part) of the Sprague Families in America …(Worcester, Mass., 1905), 7). Christian’s name as found in the Latin record may be seen as merely a clerk’s attempt to render a dative ending for the female yet non-feminine given name Christian. Christian is of course a name given in this period to both male and female children, as for example in this entry from the register of Owermoigne:""hristian daughter of Richard Holmer (baptized) October 30 1575.""
  • RESEARCH_NOTES: 1. NEHGS Register, July 1980, v. 134, pp. 194-198, article entitled "Some Sprague Records in Weymouth, Tincleton, and Dorchester, Dorset," by Ruth Sprague Dowty [see notes of Edward Sprague for full transcript from which this partial excerpt is taken]: "...This also mayt be the property about which John Corbin, stepfather of Ralph Sprague, urgently wrote him from Upway on 25 March 1651, "write unto mee your mynd aboout the tenement of yours in Upway being now in the possession of Thomas Murrie. Also I am very Sorrie to understand that my brother in law John Holland shall report...that your are dead...but I give God praise that I heare to the contrary..." Since Ralph had been dead for a year the lease was legally his brother's, if alive. In not, the 1636 document would return the property to the Hayne family. From that letter stems the 128-year-old Sprague/Holland puzzle about which many genealogists have speculated.(14) Corbin's signature as "father in law" has been correctly interpreted to mean stepfather but "brother in law" should not have been then literally since terms of family relationships then were used so loosely. The solution to the puzzle lies in Tincleton's parish records, which begin in 1576: John Holland married Sprague's widowed daughter, Alice. Thus the Holland family has no apparent connection with Christian's own ancestry, as has been thought.

Notes From Sue Bates, correspondent.

  • The original Will of Edward Sprague, probated Oct. 13, 1614, a few days after his death, requesting Ralph to "promise that his mother Christiana shall quietly enjoy the said living until he shall be one and twenty years of age," has been handed down, in fine preservation with writing distinct, to the present generation. The widow Christiana married John Corbin, of Upway.
  • 4. Chamberlain, The Spragues, 21. Bartelot speculates further that Christian was a sister to John Holland of Tincleton. Since Edward Sprague III married John Holland’s daughter Elizabeth in Tincleton 31 Jan. 1651, this would lead to the awkward conclusion that Christian’s grandson married her niece.
