Death Notice

SAG Eilerd / Eilert bygewerk

Phillip, Peter 1979. "Discharge soldiers and sailors who were granted permission to remain at the Cape: 1815-1824." Familia XVI No. 3 1979 (Supplement)

# 10/7/1817 Eilert, Christian from the 60th Regiment

  1. 613 settlers from the 60th Foot (King's Royal Rifle Corps) served in South Africa Jul-March 1806 & Sep 1811 - Jan 1819
  2. "At the beginning of the 19th century, some British regiments contained a high proportion of foreigners - mercenaries and 'displaced soldiers' from the Continent of Europe whose countries had been overrun by the French. The 1st Battalion of the 60th Regiment was one of these regiments. 613 men of the 60th Regiment applied for and received Colonial Passes. This accounts for the high incidence of German, Dutch/Flemish, Slavic and Latin names appearing among the ex-Service Settlers"
