About Christiana Brink

She was born in June 1865 as Christiana van Driel in the village of Maasdam, south of Rotterdam, in the southern part of the Dutch southwestern province Zuid-Holland, the first child of Leendert van Driel and Cornelia Groenewoud.

The family Van Driel emigrated in 1872 to the USA. In June 1900 her father Leonard Van Driel (62, teamster), her mother Cornelia (61) and her sister Anegje (34) were living at a rented house in Calumet Township, in the southern Ward 34 of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

On 18 May 1893 Christina Vandriel (27, Holland) and Andrew Brink (31, Holland) had in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois son Henry.

Her husband Andrew Brink died on 17 April 1894 at the age of 31 years in Cook County, Illinois, very probably in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He was buried in Mount Greenwood in southern Chicago.

Widow Christiana Van Driel remarried on 25 November 1896, very likely in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois to the 12 years older Jacob Hillegonds, also born in the Netherlands and since March 1895 widower of Guurtje (Gertie) Eriks. Source of marriage date: Pieter Schager, e-mail December 2014.

In March 1898 Christina and Jacob Hillegonds had in Chicago son Jacob.

In June 1900 Christiana (34, June 1865, Holland), her husband Jacob Hillegonds (46, born in Holland in August 1853, labor foreman), their children Gertie Hillegonds (20, Nov 1879, Holland, servant), Arie (19, Apr 1881, Holland, iron roller), Annie (16, May 1884, Illinois), John (11, June 1889, Illinois), Leendert (9, August 1890, Illinois), Peter (9, December 1890, Illinois), Gerrit (8, May 1892, Illinois), Henry (7, May 1893, Illinois), Andrew (5, September 1894, Illinois) and Jacob (2, March 1898, Illinois) were living at their own home at Wabash Avenue in Hyde Park Township, Ward 34 of [South] Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. The children Leendert, Henry (Hendrik) and Andrew (Andries) were from the first marriage of Christina to Andrew (Andries) Brink.

In 1910 Christina (45), her husband Jacob Hillegonds (57), their children Leonard B Hillegonds (19), Gerhard (17), Henry B (16), Andrew (15), Jacob H (12) and Kate (7, Indiana) lived in the town or township of St. John, about seven miles south of Munster and Highland, Lake County, in the utter northwestern part of Indiana.

In September 1918 the family Hillegonds was living in the city of Hammond, nowadays with more than 80,000 people and the southern part of the Chicago metropolitan area, Lake County, Indiana, when son Jacob Hillegonds Jr, born in March 1898 and laborer at Standard Steel Car Company (SSC), was administrated on a World War I Draft Registration Card.

In November 1918 her husband Jacob Hillegonds died at the age of 65 years, very probably at their home in Hammond.

In April 1940 Christine Hillegonds (74, widow) lived at the own home, worth $3000, of her daughter Kate (37) and her husband William Flym (39, Minnesota, checker at a railroad company) at Ada Street in Lansing, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois. They lived in 1935 at the same house.

Christine died in January 1945 at the age of 79 years in Lansing, a village south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, bordered to the east by Munster and Hammond in Indiana.
