Indian Fighter or Not
Christopher Dennis born in Germany on March 24, 1815;
He bought 200 acres at Glade Run;
History tells the rest:
We can't prove the belief that Christopher Dennis was among the Indian Fighters in Eastern Pennsylvania, or even where he spent his time in America before coming to Grant District. Our best information is that he was born in Germany on March 24, 1815, purchased 200 acres on Glade Run from Catharine, Henry and Jane Woods. Glade Run is located between Glade Farms and Clifton and the 200 acres he purchased were part of Martin Judy's Big Survey. On this farm, Christopher died and was buried in 1828.
In 1833 Christopher's widow, Catharine, and his children sold the farm to John G. Meyers of Fayette County and since there is a John G. Meyers cemetery in the area, perhaps Christopher and Catharine rest there.
The Dennis children were: John and Henry who went back to Pennsylvania--no information; Mary c. 1785-? m. Henry Sliger; Elizabeth, born in Md. c. 1788--d. 1859 m. John Rishel; Barbara 1800--1873 m. Stephen Guthrie; Susannah m. Joseph Paxton--no information; and David, Sr. The Dennis descendants have spent about as much time on one side of the Preston-Fayette border as the other. We'll file the girls with their husbands' families and continue the story with David's descendants.
David Dennis, Sr. was born 18 Sept. 1804 in Maryland and died in Preston Co. 4 June 1861. His wife was the former Catherine Strawser 1811-1897 and they rest in Shady Grove Cemetery. David, Sr. willed the 199 acres on which he lived near Glade Farms to his namesake, David, Jr., but record of it was lost in the courthouse fire and young David had to re-establish title to it. The 14 children of David and Catherine were: John; Jacob; Christopher; Philip; Elizabeth 1837-1840; George; Henry; Sarah m. Amos Fisher; David; Mary m. William Frankhouser; Catherine; Amy; Samuel and another David, the last two twins. All of the last four children died in 1857, ranging in age from 1-1/2 to 7 years of age.
