Research of these generations from ROLF to Christopher Fitz Randolph was done by Sir Anthony R. Wagner, Garter Principal King of Arms, London, England. His findings have been passed by the Committee on Heraldry, and registered with the College of Arms there. All data and information are from pedigree outlines dated 19 May 1972 and 03 September 1975 sent to Oris H. Fitz Randolph (Reference #2-8-5-6-8-1-1) by Sir Anthony R. Wagner. Extracts of wills of Christopher F.R., his son Christopher F.R. and Edward F.R. are part of this documentation.

In notes and analysis dated 03 September 1975, he indicated a need for further documentation of Families of Ralph Fitz Randall, John Fitz Randolph (son of Ralph Fitz Randall), and John Fitz Randolph (son of John Fitz Randolph). Wagner concludes, however, that it seems nearly certain that Christopher Fitz Randolph was descended from the Spennithorne line.

The ancestors of the Fitz Randolph family became established and lived in England during the three great European Historical Periods:

1. THE MIDDLE AGES (500-1300) sometimes called the Dark Ages, the period when most of the population lived on the land; when most governments were of the feudal system or groups of baronies, some of which were democratic in nature; and when the Pope at Rome proclaimed dominion, civil and political, as well as spiritual over the rulers as well as the ruled.

2. THE RENAISSANCE (1300-1500) the period in which more people began to live in towns. This was the period of the development of national literature and fine arts; the development of capitalism and banking; the voyages of exploration and discovery; and above all the establishment of Monarchial or strong central governments in many of the European countries.

3. THE REFORMATION AND RELIGIOUS WARS (1500-1648) the period in which the papal powers were striving to maintain dominant influence over all people, while the rulers of many of these countries were equally determined that their governments would not be dominated by the church and the Pope at Rome. England changed several times from Catholicism to Protestantism and back again with the change of rulers, some of whom embraced the Roman religion, and some Protestantism.

Although many of the Fitz Randolphs would have preferred to continue in the faith of their forefathers, open resistance to the change probably would have resulted in confiscation of their property and in some cases execution on the block. Throughout all of this time, the name Fitz Randolph persisted. Some family names came into use only to pass out of usage in a few years, but the name Fitz Randolph continued.

The name Randolph is said to have come from the old Norse name "Reignwolf" meaning Big Wolf; or "Rannulfr" which means shield wolf; the Old German "Rannulf" meaning raven wold; and the Anglo Saxon "raed wulf" meaning counsel wolf. The idea intended to be conveyed is not so much a wolf of large size, but of rank and importance. Through the many centuries, and in the migrations from Normandy to England and later to America, the name has undergone many dialectical changes. Through this early period of time, the great majority of people were illiterate. Church, Monastery, and public records, such as they were, were kept in Latin. Numerous variations of spelling of the name have been Ranolf, Ranulf, Ranulfus, Radulph, Randolph, Rolf, Rollo and Ralph.
Fitz is the term meaning "son of", this being as near as the Normans could come to saying "Filius", the Latin word for son. Thus evolved the name Fitz Randolph.
THE FITZ RANDOLPH COAT OF ARMS: "Ar. a chief indented az. Crest - On a chapeau or, turned up az, a wyvern of the last." This gives a description identified with the Fitz Randolphs of Nottinghamshire and Spennithorne. Burke's General Armory, 1884 gives this description: " Fitz Randof (Langdon Hall, Co. Notts, 1614, and Chesterfield Co. Derby; Edward Fitz Randolph. Visit Notts, 1614)
