Christopher Hussey
- 1899-1970
- Grew up at Scotney, Lamberhurst, Kent Writer and Campaigner - Architectural Historian.
Published his first article in Country Life in 1917 whilst still at school. Joined Country Life in 1920; Editor 1933-1940 - wrote on Country Houses until his death. He is regarded as one of the foremost writers on English domestic architecture.
He was one of the first to recognise that historic houses were threatened by social and financial changes - campaigning that they should be preserved - influencing Lord Lothian who masterminded the National Trust's Country Houses Scheme.
Christopher Hussey inherited Scotney from his uncle Edward Windsor Hussey in 1952. He spent the last years of his life looking after the house and gardens for future generations.
Publications
- In collaboration with H. Avray Tipping on "In English Homes, Period IV, vol. 2", 1927.
- 1927 he published "The Picturesque: Studies in a Point of View", 1927.
- Series of articles for "Country Life" magazine, which placed architectural history in its social context.
- Later books on Georgian country houses, published from 1954 until 1958, helped renew interest in the buildings of the Regency period.
- Also published monographs on individual houses, including Clarence House, London, Berkeley Castle and Eton College.
- biographies of the architects Sir Robert Lorimer, and Sir Edwin Lutyens.
- worked with John Cornforth on new editions of his "Guide to English Country Houses Open to the Public".
