Parish register of St. Mary's in Marlborough, Wilts, England, begins in 1602, is found the following:

It would appear from the register of St. Mary's that Christopher Osgood lost his first wife soon after the birth of his daughter Mary, and again married a few months after. On the 24th March 1633/34 his name occurs in the list of passengers of New England by the Mary and John, of london, who then took the oath of allegiance and supremacy, and the 6th May 1685, he was admitted freeman by the Massachuetts General Court. Christopher Osgood settled at Ipswich, shortly after his arrival in New England, and died there in 1650, leaving, it is aid, a widow Margery, and children , Mary, Elizabeth, Abigail, and Christopher born in 1643, After his death his widow Margery married her fellow townsman Thomas Coleman, who also came from Marlborough, Wilts.

On 5 Jan 1634/35 he received a grant from the town of Ipswich, of "four acres of meadow and marsh ground,...by the land side, lying northward of the Town, aand marsh is not limited," and 26 Jan 1634/35. " a Hill of ground containing 6 acres of land,' and in1635, "six acres of meadow towards of Neck, having Philip FOWLER east, and a Creek on the northwest, also six acres of planting ground upon the hill, on the north side of the Town, having Philip FOWLER on the east, and Robert ANDREWS on the west, and John CROSS on the south"Also upland beyond muddy river, forming northwest boundary of Philip FOWLER's. "I, Christopher OSGOOD of Ipswich, being weake in body, but of perfect understandins & memory, doe comitt my soule into the hands of my redeemer, & concering that little Estate the Lord hath lent mee, this is my last will & testament. First, I do give unto my oldest daught Mary OSGOOD, ten pounds, to be paid her or her assign at her day of mariage, & to my other three daughters, Abigail, Elizabeth & Deborah, five pounds to each of them, to be paid to them, and every of them, at or upon thier respective dayes of marriage. And to my sonne Chirstoper=OSGOOD, I do give my house and lands, to have & enjoy the same, at the age of two & twentie yeares. And my will is, that my beloved wife Margery OSGOOD, shal be sole executix of my will, & to enjoy the proffit & benefitt of my estate, during the minority of my children, as abovesaid. And lastly, I doe request and desire Mr. John NORTON, and Father Phillip FOWLER, to be overseers, that this my will be performed, according to the true intent thereof. Christopher Osgood migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

Biography

Christopher Osgood was born in the tiny village of Newton Tony, Wiltshire, England. He was baptized at St. Andrew's on 17 April 1606, the son of Thomas and Margaret Skeat Osgood. [1][2][3]

He married twice. His first wife was Mary Everatt of Marlborough, Wiltshire, England.[4]She died shortly after giving birth to their only child, Mary, who was baptized at St. Mary's Marlborough on 17 March 1632/3. Three months later Christopher married Margery Fowler.[5][6][7]

Christopher Osgood, Immigrant

Although Christopher Osgood married at the parish church of St. Mary's, Marlborough, Wiltshire, in 1632, he was not from that parish. Records uncovered by Jane Fletcher Fiske, FASG and published in 2009 show that he was baptized at Newton Tony, Wiltshire, England, on 17 April 1606, son of Thomas and Margaret (Skeat) Osgood.[5]
New Evidence on Ancestors of Christopher Osgood II

In 1866 Osgood Field published notes on the Osgood family in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. In 1894 Ira Osgood and Eben Putnam expanded Field's work in a Genealogy of the Descendants of John Christopher and William Osgood. In 1940 John Insley Coddington summarized what was known at that time, in TAG. No new research has appeared until the TAG article by Jane Fletcher Fiske, FASG, published 2009. [5] This profile of Christopher Osgood, and his ancestors, now reflect the new discoveries. Fiske goes on to show that the father of Christopher Osgood II, Thomas Osgood, was born about 1570, probably at Newton Tony, Wiltshire, and was buried there on 16 June 1634.[5] He married there on 13 July 1595, Margaret Sckett [Skeat], who was buried 1 May 1 May 1616.[5] Marriage

Immigration

Christopher Osgood, having taken the Oaths of Supremacy & Allegiance came to the New World aboard the ship Mary & John of London, on a list date 24 March 1633/4 sailing from Southampton for New England, with Robert Sayres as master.[11]

Christopher Osgood of Marlborough, England emigrated to Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1633 with his second wife, Margaret Fowler. He settled on four acres of land, the center of which lies today at the intersection of Central, Hammett, and Manning Streets. Christopher had one child by his first wife, Mary Everatt. The child was named Mary and was born in England in 1633. Through his second wife he had five children born in America; Abigail, born 1636; Elizabeth, born 1638; Deborah, born 1640; Christopher, born 1643; and Thomas, born 1651. When Christopher died in 1650, the sons were taken in by the Family of John Osgood in Andover. This is another indication that these Osgoods were related. Christopher Osgood, the son, became a contributing member to the Town of Andover. He was a Captain in the Militia and was a Representative. His grandson, Ezekiel, settled the Town of Blue Hill, Maine, where he was deeded one-half of the Town. Many Osgoods still reside on the Blue Hill Peninsula.

The other son, Thomas, is not known after 1694. It is presumed that he migrated to South Carolina with his Family. There was a group that left from Dorchester, Massachusetts, about this time.

Christopher Osgood, with his wife Margaret Fowler, and her parents, Phillip and Mary Fowler, sailed together on the Mary & John, were among the earliest settlers of Ipswich, Massachusetts, and obtained adjoining land grants. [12] On 24 March 1633/4 Christopher and Margery, Mary Osgood, Margery's parents, and family, set sail aboard the Mary and John bound for New England.[13]

Ipswich, Massachusetts

Christopher was a brick-maker by trade. He was made a freeman on 6 May 1635, and he must have been a solid member of his church, a requirement for Freemanship.[13] He received a houselot and multiple plots of land over the course of his life. He served on the petit jury and the grand jury. Just as he was entering the prime of his life, he died. Christopher wrote his will on 19 April 1650 and it was proved in October of that same year.[13] All of his children were under age, his son Christopher Jr. was to inherit the bulk of his estate. His daughter Mary was to get 10 pounds on the day of her marriage, the younger daughters only five pounds each.

Christopher, a brick-maker, signed the freeman’s oath 6 May 1635. A resident of Ipswich, Massachusetts, he served on juries in 1642, 1645, 1648 and 1650. He received town grants of land in Ipswich, and also sold land.

Death & Will

Christopher Osgood died at Ipswich, Massachusetts, between 19 April 1650 - the date of his will, and 10 October 1650 - the date his will was proved. In it he left “my eldest daughter Mary Osgood ten pounds … at her day of marriage” ; to “my other three daughters, Abigail, Elizabeth and Deborah five pounds to each of them … at or upon their respective days of marriage” to “my son Christopher Osgood … my house & lands … at the age of two and twenty years”; “my beloved wife Margery Osgood shall be the sole executrix of this my will & to enjoy the profit & benefit of my estate during the minority of my children”. He requested Mr. John Norton “& my father Phillip Fowler to be overseers.” Apparently the estate of Christopher did not stretch to meet all the bequests he made, for Margery petitioned the court 15 Oct 1650, to help order and manage the estate, as closely to Christopher’s will as possible, and that herself and children may be most comfortably provided for. She refers to herself as "Margery Osgood, widow, of Ipswich", showing that Ipswich was the home of Christopher when he died. The court altered the legacies, oldest daughter to receive 8 pounds, instead of ten; second daughter to receive 4 pounds instead of five; and that the son Christopher pay his two youngest sisters 4 pounds each on their marriage.
