In 1895, she moved to 520 St. Peter Street, a location in the Pontalba Apartments on Jackson Square, where she lived until her death. Her daughter Elizabeth lived in the Pontalba buildings most of the rest of her life, and Clelie Thompson Nelson was raised there.

Staunch opponent of General Benjamin Butler during his martial law in New Orleans. Butler had taken over her family plantation, forcing the family to permanently move to the city. She openly broke anti-Confederate regulations instituted by Butler, writing to let him know that she was President Lincoln's sister-in-law, and she would do as she pleased.
