CLAES CORNELISSEN van SCHOUWEN b abt 1605, d abt 1674 prob near Flatbush, Long Island, New Amsterdam/New York; married Metje HARPERTS in 1632 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Metje died 1652 in Bergen Co NJ. CLAES CORNELISSEN van SCHOUWEN is possibly the originator of the "Wyckoff" surname in America?? [No, he’s not. He was not the father of Pieter Claesen Wyckoff].

CLAES' nickname was "Mutelaer" (Grumbler), and an island near Long Island was named after him, although it is now known as Bergen Island.



He was a witness to a baptism in the NYDRC on 07 September, 1642 along with Joris Rappalje.

Claes Corneliss was born about 1607 in Brouwershaven, Schouwen, Zeeland, Netherlands (now called Schouwen Duiveland). His parents are not known.

Claes married Metje Herperts on March 21, 1632 in Sloterdijck (near Amsterdam) Noord Holland, Netherlands. At the time of the marriage he was 25 and living at the Brouwersgracht, and Metje was 20, born in Amsterdam, the daughter of Pietertje Jacobs and Herpert Jansz. [1]

Claes is believed to have died about 1674."

CRV notes that, in "Kings Co. Wills (NYGBR, vol XLVII, p. 165), the will of "Swaentie Janse, widow of Cornelius Depotter" written March 31, 1676 includes, as a witness, a "Claes Cornelinssen". If this is Claes Cornelissen van Schouw, this may be the last known record of Claes, then about 71 years old. Claes does not appear on the Roll of Allegiance taken in 1687.
