Corporal Clarence Theodore Elphick of 10 Light Horse Regiment was born in December 1885. He was one of six sons and five daughters born to Dr Edward and Mrs Emily Elphick who lived at Maitland, South Australia.
Clarence attended Moonta public school in South Australia and enjoyed cricket. He moved to Western Australia around 1899 where he and one of his brothers share farmed at Barton, which is near Piesseville, Wagin.
Later he married Margaret Godschall-Johnston from ‘Sunnymead’ at Bunbury.
Clarence enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in October 1916 at Perth, Western Australia.
Following initial training, he was allotted to 1 to 5 Divisional Signal companies general re-inforcements, special draft.
He embarked for Moascar, Egypt on HMAT Kyarra in Sydney in September 1917.
After arriving in Egypt, he served with signals units until he was promoted to corporal in May 1915 and then transferred to 10 Light Horse from the same date.
In October, he was admitted to hospital in Zeitoun and later, he was transferred to 31 Stationary Hospital at Abbassia, Egypt, where he later died of enteric fever.
Corporal Clarence Theodore Elphick, service number 19325 of 10 Light Horse regiment, died of illness on 10 November 1918. He was 32 years of age.
He is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Cairo, Egypt.
