Clark Van Fleet Succumbs

Portland — Funeral services for Clark Crocker Van Fleet, nationally known as a sportsman and conservationist and who spent a number of years in Santa Rosa, were held here yesterday.

Mr. Van Fleet, who was 79, died Monday at a Portland hospital.

Until six weeks ago he had lived at 451 B Las Casitas Drive, Wikiup, Santa Rosa, and had moved back to Portland to be with his daughter, Mrs. Chester N. Wachsmuth.

His wife, Kathleen, had preceded him in death in 1964. Surviving are Mrs. Wachsmuth, and other daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth de Schwinitz, Beaumont, Texas, a brother, William B. Van Fleet, San Francisco, and a sister, Mrs. Allyn Maxwell, New York. Also there are six grandchildren.

Mr. Van Fleet had spent the early years of his marriage in Santa Rosa, from 1915 to 1925, operating an electrical appliance business.

In 1925, Mr. Van Fleet moved to Humboldt County, and then to Portland in 1937 where he was a division manager for the Shell Oil Company.

Subsequently he was named to the Portland City Council, in August, 1943, where he served the shortest term on record. The day after he was appointed it was learned his home was a short distance outside the city.
In 1950, he returned to the Redwood Empire, living at Lakeport for a few years. He was the author of the book, Steelhead to a Fly, which was published in 1954.

The family has suggested that friends make any contributions to the local Salvation Army, as for some years Mr. Van Fleet had been a director of the organization and served it in many capacities.
