About Clarkson Spencer
Shows up in the 1880 census from Johnson, IN, Clinton County. His occupation was a farmer, and his fathers birthplace was Virginia, and his mothers in Ohio.
Civil War records show that he enlisted as a private into Co. "C" of the 10th Indiana infantry, enlisting from Clinton County, IN on 1/7/1864 as a private. He was transferred into company "C", 58th Indiana infantry on 9/8/1864. The 58th served as pontooneers to Gen. Sherman on his march to the sea, attached to Slocum's army. They marched up through the Carolinas and Richmond, VA on their way to Washington DC at the end of the war. He mustered out in Louisville, KY on 7/25/1865.
The document shows that Clark Spencer was in Ohio in 1840, as he got a land patent. Interesting, this land was actually in what is now Indiana, but was registered in Cincinnati, Ohio, the local governing body at that time. Also of note, the President at that time was Martin Van Buren, and his secretary was M. Van Buren, Jr., no political favorites back then! (ed. Rich Teague)
He homesteaded NE CO, listed 1893 1157.88 acres E1/2NW quarter and Lots 1 & 2 in township 7N. Range 46W 6th Prime Meridian, Phillips County, Colorado.
After his wife Emily Hiatt died, he married Emily Spillman, Jan. 1872 in Clinton Co, IN. They had no children together, but she brought two daughters from her previous marriage.
25 jan 1872 marriage
