BIOGRAPHY Claude was born in 1485, the son of Guillaume IV de Vergy, seigneur de Vergy, de Saint Dizier et de Champvent, and Anne de Rochechouart. His marriage before 1500 to Hélène de Gruyère did not result in progeny. She died in 1522, and in the following year he married Philiberte de Vienne, daughter of Gérard de Vienne, seigneur de Ruffey, de Desnes, and Bénigne de Dinteville. They had a daughter Antoinette who would have progeny, marrying Henri de Pontailler, seigneur de Flagey. Claude, who was made a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1546 by Emperor Charles V, was governor and marshal of the county of Burgundy (Franche-Comté). On 10 June 1556 he summoned the Estates of the county to its capital Dôle, and Pierre de Barres, president of the parliament of Dôle, transferred the county in Charles' name to his son Philip. Charles had transferred sovereignty over Spain and Sicily to Philip in January of that year.
Claude died on 9 January 1560. He was followed as governor of the county of Burgundy by his nephew François de Vergy and two of his sons, Claude II and Clériadus.
