About Clavis Andrew Thomas, Sr

CLAVIS ANDREW THOMAS was born 5 December 1912 at Salem in Harrison County, West Virginia a son of Joe and Addie Cunningham Thomas. His birth was not recorded until 22 September 1968 on a Delayed birth Certificate.

    He started work when he was 9 to help support his family. Every year he raised a garden. Sometimes as much as three acres of garden was grown and worked all by hand. 
    Andy served in the U. S. Navy as a Cook in World War II. His military records are on file in the Harrison County Court House at Clarksburg, WV in Military Book 14 Page 205. He was wounded when a Japanese airplane attacked the submarine he was on (the USS Greeniet). He received a massive amount of shrapnel and was in the hospital in San Diego, California for a long period of time. He carried shrapnel in his body the rest of his life. He worked as a grinder and decorator at McBride Glass Company, later named the Minners Glass Company in Salem, West Virginia. He also worked for the City of Salem in the Water Department.
    Resident at Route 1, Box 22, Jasper, Pickens County, GA, Andy died on 30 November 1983 at the R. T. Jones Memorial Hospital in Canton, Cherokee County, GA. He had stomach and lung cancer. Andy was buried on 3 December 1983 in the Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery near Jasper. Resident of Route 2, Box 223, Jasper, Pickens County, GA.

Joseph Soborowski was born 20 June 1883 in Allegheny County, PA the son of Michael and Pauline Soborowski. Joseph Soborowski and ADDIE FRANCES CUNNINGHAM were married 21 August 1911 in Harrison County, WV. He was a resident of Industrial, WV and she was a resident of Harrison County. Joseph's last name was changed from Soborowski to Thomas after his marriage. When Joseph died his death record says he was born in Pennsylvania the son of John & Pauline Thomas.

Addie Frances Cunningham was born 10 April 1891 on Elk Lick in Doddridge County, WV the daughter of George W. & Mary M. A. Roberts Cunningham. The George Cunningham family was living on Archies Fork in Wetzel County, Grant District in 1910. The family consisted of George age 37; Mary age 34; Addie age 18; Ivy age 17; Mollie age 12; Clara age 10; Lizzie (Isabelle) age 8; and May age 5.

George W. Cunningham was born in Noble County, Ohio and Mary M. Roberts was born in March 1866 in Doddridge County, WV. They were married on 9 August 1890 in Doddridge County.

Joseph Thomas family lived near Clarksburg in 1920 and consisted of: Joseph age 35; Etta F. age 24; Andrew age 6; Joseph Jr. age 4; Frankie, male, age 3; & Bessie M. age 3 months.

Joseph Thomas worked in the Carbon factory in Clarksburg.

Addie Frances Thomas died on Sunday, 1 February 1926 at the Harrison County Infirmary near Clarksburg, WV. Resident of Union Heights #2 she died of cancer of the left breast. Information on the Death Certificate was given by Carrie Cunningham; however, many of the question were answered "Don't know. " Arrangements for burial was made by the Romine Undertaking Parlors. Addie was buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Simpson District at Anmoore. No marker.

Surviving Addie were her children: Clavis age 13; Joseph Jr age 10; Frank age 11; Bessie Mae age 6; and Walter age 3.

Isabelle Cunningham Gordon, Addie's sister, became the guardian for Bessie Mae.

Joseph Thomas Sr. was found dead in his room where he lived alone at 301 North First Street in the Anmoore section of Clarksburg on 24 October 1951. Joe died of chronic myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) on 23 October 1951. He was survived by two sons, Clavis Andrew of Salem and Joseph Thomas Jr of Anmoore. The McGlumphy Mortuary handled his burial arrangements. He was buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery on 27 October 1951 beside his wife Addie. No marker.

ANDY THOMAS'S BROTHER'S AND SISTER

1. Joseph Thomas Jr born 15 December 1915 at Salem, Harrison County, West Virginia a son of Joseph & Addie Frances Cunningham Thomas. His birth was not recorded until 1 November 1949 on a Delayed Birth Certificate. He was the third husband to ALDIE PEARL BATES JONES HUPP. Aldie Pearl Bates was born 27 October 1902 at Folsom, Wetzel County, WV on the short line railroad, a daughter of William Sylvanus & Myrtle J. Rogers Bates.

Aldie was first married to Charles Edmond Jones on 6 April 1922 in Doddridge County, WV. They were married by A. J. Starkey a Minister of the Church of Christ. Charlie was born 16 November 1889 in Wetzel County, WV a son of William L. & Harriet E. Swiger Jones. Charlie worked as a coal miner. Charlie and Aldie Pearl had two sons: William Linsay Jones who was born 25 August 1924 at Fairmont, Marion County, WV. He married Anna Lou Carr on 29 April 1945 in Harrison County, WV; and Charles Edmond Jones Jr who was born 2 August 1927 at Wyatt, Harrison County, WV near the Marion County border. He was married to Bernadina Lucille Winkler on 7 February 1948 in Harrison County, WV. Charlie died of Tuberculosis of the bladder and kidney on 9 December 1930 at Meadowbrook, Harrison County, WV. He was taken back to Smithfield, Wetzel County for burial. Aldie was married second to Junior David Hupp on 7 May 1931 at Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV. They were both widowers. Her mother was married by this time to Zedic Edgell. Junior David Hupp was born 8 September 1897 in Wirt County, WV the son of David & Cynthia Mclntire Hupp according to his death record. He was born 8 September 1898 according to his Marriage Record. Junior dropped dead on Saturday noon, 21 December 1940, while working on a Joyce street WPA project in Clarksburg. The Lynch Funeral home handled the arrangements. Junior was buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Joseph Thomas Jr., and Addie Pearl Bates Jones Hupp were married 26 April 1941 in Harrison County, WV. This was his first marriage and she was twice a widow. They were married by Reverend Nelson H. Thorn at Clarksburg. They had at least one son named Leslie Leroy Thomas who was born at 7:00 p.m. on 28 March 1942 at Anmoore, near Clarksburg, WV.

Joseph Jr. worked at National Carbon near Clarksburg. Joseph died on 29 August 1959 at Anmoore, Harrison County, WV. He was buried in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery near Clarksburg. Aldie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clarksburg. Resident of Anmoore near Clarksburg, WV. She died on 9 August 1978 at the United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV. Aldie was buried in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery there.

3. Frank Thomas was born 11 November 1914 at Industrial west of Salem, WV a son of Joseph & Addie Frances Cunningham Thomas. He was born in Doddridge County, West Virginia according to information on his Marriage License; however, the birth is not recorded there. He was listed on the 1920 census of Clark District, Harrison County, WV with his family as the second child. He was married to ALICE VIRGINIA BROWN on 2 October 1941 in Salem, WV. The License was issued in Doddridge County on 29 September 1941. Alice Virginia Brown was born 24 December 1922 in Harrison County, WV the daughter of William Luther & Daisy Leaseburg Brown. William was born in Doddridge County on 19 February 1882 a son of Albert & Amanda Ash Brown. Daisy was born about 1894 in Clarksburg, WV. William and Daisy were married on 16 April 1921 at Sutton in Braxton County, WV.

Frankie worked as a B & 0 Track Man. Resident of Box 38, Industrial at West Salem, WV. He died on 7 April 1950 in the Spencer State Mental Hospital at Spencer, Roane County, WV. Cause of death was Carcinoma of Intestines with Metastases Psychosis associated with Organic nervous system. He was buried in a Clarksburg, WV Cemetery according to his Death Certificate. He was buried in the Salem IOOF Cemetery according to his Funeral Notice. No marker. When Frankie died survivor's included his wife Alice Thomas; four children: Virginia Louise, Mary June, Joseph David and Harvey Lee all at home and his father Joseph Thomas, Sr of Clarksburg; two brothers, Andrew Thomas of East Salem and Joseph Thomas Jr., of Anmoore. His body was moved from the McGlumphy Mortuary in Clarksburg to Salem where funeral services were held at the West Salem Church of God.

Children of Frank & Alice Brown Thomas:

i. Virginia Louise Thomas was born 3 September 1942 in Salem, WV. She married George Alfred Murray on 8 June 1962 in Harrison County. He was the son of James Harold & Berdella Myrtle Dunlap Murray. George was born on 21 January 1939 at Canton, Stark County, Ohio.

ii. Mary June Thomas was born 19 December 1943 in Salem, WV. Doctor was Edward Davis. She was married on 20 June 1962 in Harrison County, WV to Leo Ervin Wadsworth. Leo was the son of Lestie Leo & Rosie Sarah Blankenbiller Wadsworth and was born 12 March 1942 in Reeding, Berks County, P A.

iii. Joseph David Thomas was born 16 April 1946 in Salem, WV. His birth was also recorded in Harrison County as Thompson. Joseph David Thomas died on 20 June 1966. He had been a patient at Fritto's Nursing Home in Clarksburg. He suffered from Chondrosarcoma of the mouth. (Cancer tumor of the mouth. Dorland's Medical dictionary). His Doctor was F. B. McNutt of Salem. He was age 20 years 2 months and 4 days old and a student when he died. The Death Certificate was signed by Alvin L. Watne, M.D. West Virginia Medical Center at Morgantown, WV. He was buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Salem, WV. The Undertaker was R. Edward Harbert of Salem.

iv. Harvey Lee Thomas was born at 9:40 p.m. on 9 January 1949 in Salem, WV. Dr. Ernest L. Shore signed the Certificate of Birth. He married Kellena Mae Vandruff on 2( February 1970 at Wellsburg in Brooke County, WV. Kellena was born 13 February 1952 in Lorain, Ohio the daughter of Kelley & Ada Vandruff.

4. Bessie Mae Thomas was born 9 March 1920 in Clarksburg. WV a daughter of Joseph and Addie Frances Cunningham Thomas. She was almost 6 years old when her mother, Addie, died. Bessie was married on 2 January 1936 in Wood County, WV to EDGAR E. REED. They were both residents of Parkersburg, WV.. Edgar and Bessie were married by a minister of the Church of God. Marriage License said she was born in Wetzel County. Permission to marry was given by her guardian Bell Gordon. Addie's sister, Isabell, or Belle was married to Earl H. Gordon in Wheeling, Ohio County, WV on 26 November 1930. Both were born in Harrison County, WV. Belle Gordon died at Parkersburg, Wood County, WV on 9 August 1955.

Bessie died on 12 June 1949 of Carcinoma of the Stomach at age 29 at Belleville, Wood County, WV. She was buried at the K of P Cemetery in Williamstown, Wood County, WV. The Death Certificate said Bessie was born in Clarksburg, WV and Edgar was born about 1911 in Jackson County, WV.

5. Walter Harry Thomas was born in St. Mary's Hospital on 9 March 1922 in Clarksburg, WV a son of Joseph & Addie Frances Cunningham Thomas. He was the fifth child born and five were living.

6. Baby, unnamed, was stillborn on 27 January 1925 at Union Heights, Clarksburg, WV a son of Joseph & Addie Frances Cunningham Thomas. He was buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery, West of Clarksburg. No marker.
