Colonel Clement Read, Jr. was an attorney, planter and statesman. He married Mary Nash of Prince Edward County in December of 1757. He was appointed Colonel of Militia in 1763. He was appointed as Surveyor of Lunenburg County in 1763. He was a member of the House of Burgesses for several years in the 1760s.

Clement Read, Jr. and Mary Nash Read had five children, Lieutenant Clement Read, III (1759-1781); Mary Hill Read (Bedford) (1761-1803); John Nash Read (1763-1826); Harrison Read (1766-1781); and Thomas Read (1768-1834).
