"Uncle Clifford had gone to Detroit when my father did, but returned later than we had to find an old house south of Mobile. It was in a field where the weeds had grown to be waist high on a red clay dirt road, and one had to cross a ditch to get to the house that had no furniture except for an old hand made wooden table. He did find hope for the future and tried to convince my father to return to Detroit. But my father got a job at a sawmill where his father was a foreman and decided to stay. So I didn't have an opportunity to know what his children were doing. Then uncle [Clifford] became ill and died in 1943. Big Daddy and Sump went to Detroit for the funeral.
I did get the news that Clifford Travis [Maddox] Jr. had joined the navy and had seen carrier duty, but nothing more. " - James Lucion Maddox
