Colonel Benjamin Tusten Sr, a respectable farmer of Southold, Long Island, New York, born in 1716, he removed into Orange county, in the year 1746, bringing with him his son, and settled on the banks of the Otterkill, two and a half miles from the village of Goshen, on the patent granted to Madame Elizabeth Denn. Such was the respect in which he was held, he was soon appointed one of the judges of the county court, and promoted a colonel in the regiment of militia on the west side of the mountain, including at that time all the county of Orange, north of the Highlands, from Hudson's river to the line of New Jersey. For some time, also, he was Orange County treasurer and responsible for the collection of taxes in 1779/80 during the Revolutionary war. His first son, Benjamin Tusten Jr. was a Lieutenant Colonel with the Orange County Militia, who accompanied Colonel Hathorne's Regiment of the same militia at a jaunt into the wilderness territory of Minisink valley to protect the few residents there from attacks by a group of Loyalist and Mowhawk Indians led by Joseph Brandt who were stealing provisions, horses and cattle to support the British cause against the rebel patriots of America. Tusten Jr. was killed in the battle along with about 40 of the militia altogether, who were all memorialized with a monument, many years later, which still stands in the village of Goshen.
