  • Enoch Hunt, the immigrant ancestor, was in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1638, when he was admitted a freeman there. He was a first settler of Weymouth, Massachusetts. According to a deposition, July 2, 1688, made by Jonas Humphrey, aged about sixty-eight, and Robert Randall, aged about eighty, both of Weymouth, Enoch and his oldest son Ephraim, a blacksmith, lived in Titenden, Parish of Lee, about two miles from Wendover, county Bucks, England, for some time and then came to Weymouth ; they said that Enoch returned to England after a time, while Ephraim remained in America. Enoch also was a blacksmith. He had twenty-two acres of land in Weymouth. He married (first) in England. He married (second) Sarah, daughter of Widow Dorothy Barker, who in 1652 was wife of John King, of Weymouth, and gave by will, June 14, 1652, household goods to daughter, Sarah Hunt. On November 18, 1652, at a county court held at Boston, Ephraim was made administrator of his father's estate.

  • ( II) Ephraim, son of Enoch Hunt, was born in England in 1610, and came to America with his father. He was buried February 24, 1687, and on his gravestone is the following inscription : "Here lyeth Buried ye Body of Ephraim Hunt aged about 77 years deceased ye 22d of February 1686-7." The inventory of his estate amounted to five hundred and two pounds, and included house and orchards, twenty-three acres in lower plantations, five acres salt marsh on back river, and fifty acres near Cedar Swamp. He married (first) Anna Richards, and (second) Ebbett Brimsmead. His first wife was daughter of Thomas and Welthean Richards, and her three sons inherited a large amount of property. His second wife was sister of William Brimsmead and administered on his estate. Her will was dated April 23, 1708, and in it she mentioned her son William, of Martha's Vineyard, her son Joseph with whom she remained for many years, and his two sons and three daughters, and also William, son of her son William. She died September 9, 1712, and her will was proved January 2, 1713. Children of first wife: John, born 1646; Thomas, 1648; Ephraim, mentioned below.   • (III) Ephraim (2), son of Ephraim (1) Hunt, was born in 1650, died in 1713. In 1690 he served as captain in the Canada Expedition. In 1736 a grant of land called Huntstown was deeded to his heirs, settled in 1742 and incorporated in 1764; it is now called Ashfield. In 1706-07 he was colonel in the expedition at Groton against the Indians, and he also served in other affairs. His estate amounted to two thousand two hundred and ninety-eight pounds. He married Joanna, daughter of Dr. Alcock and granddaughter of Dr. Richard Palgrave. of Charlestown. Massachusetts. On her gravestone in the old burying ground at Acushnet Village, New Bedford, Massachusetts, is the following inscription : "Here lieth interred the body of Joanna, wife of ye Hon. Ephraim Hunt, Esq., late of Weymouth, youngest daughter of Dr. John Alcock, late of Roxbury, who died March ye 20, 1746, in ye eighty-seventh year of her age". Samuel, February 8, 1681 ; Joanna; John, buried September 4, 1761 : Peter, born March 8, 1690; William, March 14, 1692 ; Ebenezer, April 6, 1694; Thomas, May 6, 1696; Elizabeth, 1697; Sarah ; Mercy ; Ephraim, mentioned below.
  • (IV) Ephraim (3), son of Ephraim (2) Hunt, was born December 12, 1707, died February 29, 1786. He lived in Braintree, Massachusetts. He married (first) June 2, 1727, Ruth, born May 28, 1706, daughter of Samuel and Abigail Allen. He married (second) July 19, 1744, Miriam Spear. Children of first wife : Ephraim, mentioned below ; Jacob, born August 6, 1731 ; Nathaniel, March 2, 1733 ; Jonathan and Ruth, twins, August, 1736; Mary, 1739; Abigail, March 1, 1741.   • (*) ENOCH HUNT1 was of Titenden, in the parish of Lee, about two miles from Wendover, in Buckinghamshire, 35 miles W. N. W. from London. He and his eldest son Ephraim Hunt,2 blacksmith, came to New England, and settled in Weymouth, Enoch Hunt1 soon returned to England; but his son Ephraim2 remained in Weymouth; married, and had several sons; d. Feb. 1687, or about that time. His eldest son, Thomas Hunt,3 blacksmith, was of Boston, 1682 and 1688.
  • The facts just stated are testified to in a deposition by Jonas Humphrey. a. 68, and Robert Randall, a. 80, of Weymouth, sworn to before E. Andros, June 2, 1688. They say that they themselves lived some time in Wendover, County of Bucks, England, and were acquainted there with Enoch Hunt,1 and his son Ephraim,2 and had known Thomas,3 son of the latter, from his childhood [Jonas Humphrey2 came to Dorchester about 1635, with his elder brother James,2 b. in England 1608, and their father JONAS.1 Jonas1 was a tanner; had been constable in Wendover, England; freeman, 1640 James2 continued in Dorchester; Jonas2 came to Weymouth.   • Ebbet Hunt, widow of Ephraim Hunt,2 blacksmith, of Weymouth, deceased, made her will April 23, 1708; proved Jan. 2, 1711-12; recorded Suff. Prob, 17: 363. Mentions son William Hunt of Martha's Vineyard, son Joseph of Milton, (with whom she had lived many years past.) his sons Joseph and Alexander Hunt, his daus. Margaret, Martha, and Jane: also her grandson William, son of William.

  • Major Ephraim HUNT was born about 1650 in Weymouth, MA. (1485) The will of Welthian Richards, specifically mentions Ephraim and John, sons of the husband of her late daughter Anne. He died in Jun 1713 in Weymouth, MA?.(1486) He was Child born in Weymouth.(1487) Weymouth records also show a son John Hunt, born Dec 11, 1679. In the Weymouth birth records he is called Major Ephraim Hunt and his wife Joanna Hunt. Savage says rep. 1689, 90 and 91, “a Col. by this honor led on to partake in the preposterious exped. of Phips to the St. Lawrence, in command of a comp. soon after ret. was made in 1703 a couns. till d. June 1713.”

  • THE wills of Thomas Richards of Weymouth, Mass., and his widow, Welthian Richards of Boston, will interest many descendants of Plymouth .Colony families, since their daughter Mary Richards was the first wife of Thomas2 Hinckley † (Samuel1), afterwards governor of Plymouth Colony, and bore him eight children, all but one of whom married. The daughter Alice Richards became the wife of William2 Bradford ‡ (Gov. William1) and bore him ten children, all of whom married.
  • The will of Thomas Richards was made at Hull, Mass., at the house of Thomas Loring, on 27 December, 1650, and the inventory of his goods at Weymouth was taken 18 January, 1650/1; he must, therefore, have died between these two dates;’ None of the papers relating to his estate were recorded, and the following abstracts, with the literal copy of the petition of the heirs, were made from the original documents, now in the Suffolk County Probate Files in Boston.
  • The will of the widow Welthian—Richards was made at Boston on 3 July, 1679, and proved November, 1679, and she must have died between these dates. Her will, also, is in the Suffolk County Probate Files and the abstract here presented was made from the original document.

  • The will of Thomas Richards of Weymouth was made at the house of Thomas Loring, in Hull, Mass., 17 December, 1650, and was proved 28 January, 1652/1. Bequests were made to his wife; to son John, who is away from home; to son James; to son Samuel; to sons Joseph and Benjamin, both under twenty-one years of age; daughters mary and An and Alce and Hannah; shall have halfe so much as my sonnes; all alike” but Mary is to have ?10 more than the others; “to Brother Thos Loringe.” Son John, Thomas Loring and Nicholas Baker are to see that the will is carried out.
  • On 18 and 25 January, 1650/1, the goods at Weymouth, Mass., and Boston were inventoried.
  • On 28 January, 1650/1, the inventories were sworn to by Mrs. Richards. An account rendered by her mentions debts due to “mr ffermace of Plimouth,” to Thomas Hinckley, to Ephraim Hunt and to Captain Standish of Duxbury.

  • EPHRAIM HUNT, of Rehoboth 1644, son of Enoch, was born in England; removed thence to Weymouth; married 1st, Sarah Barker. His will is dated April 7, 1687.
