"WARD, EDWARD, Colonel, Here lyeth the Body of Colonel Edward Ward, Esq. Born 22 March 1694, and died Sept 18th, 1766. Aged 72 years 5 months and 15 days.

He was one of ye first settlers, and was wounded in ye first of ye Indian Wars) yet he lived to have by his only wife Elizabeth, fifteen children, which fifteen have already produced for him eighty six grandchildren and fourteen g.gr.children in all one hundred fifteen.

Cruel relentless Death has Laid his head Low in the Gloomy mansions of the Dead Where lie the greatest Prince and meanest Slave Equally moldering in the Silent Grave Still tho his earthly part in the dust is laid We hope his dearest soul to Heaven is fled."

The handwriting was not that hard to read, and I have transcribed it as written, spelling and all. Most of the blanks are where the paper is gone. This will is in the loose papers of the NC Archives, of which I have a copy.

Ward of the County of Onslow and province of North Carolina planter - being in perfect mind and memory thank God for it there for calling to mind the mortaltey of _____? ______? appointed to all men once to die do make and ____________? last will and testament that is to principaly and ___________? it shall plese God to take out of this world _______? ___________? the hands of God that gave it (one fourth of this page is gone in the first fold of the paper).... all my household goods and my female deto? which negros good and here disposal to any of my children or grandchildren as shall think proper at her decese and likewise I lend and leve in possession during her natural life six of my other negros named Charles and Judge, Sall, Cuff, Tom and Rose and at her decease assend to those I have given and bequeath them to ____________? if shee ? but those negros is not to be transported out of the County to be ________? _______? by any person that may chance to take shap what so ever after my decess which will be of my executor to prevent.
