Grandson of General and later President, William Henry Harrison and cousin of President Benjamin Harrison. Graduate of West Point in 1845 and served in the Mexican War in the First Ohio infantry and became adjutant of that unit. He served under the command of General Taylor for the duration of the war. He entered law school and was later admitted to the bar in Indiana.

During the civil war he became colonel of the 11th Ohio infantry. He was aide-de-camp to his close friend, General William Lytle(buried @ spring grove cemetery, hamilton, county, ohio) at the Battle of Chickamauga. He was with General Lytle when he was mortally wounded on September 20, 1864. He resigned from the army shortly after Lytle died of his wounds. By 1866, he was living in Linn county, Kansas where he pursued a career as a county surveyor. His other cousin, John Scott Harrison Jr.,(brother of President Benjamin Harrison) is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri. I have added John's gravestone here.
