Col. Slaughter served the country as Ensign and Lieutenant in the French and Indian War. He was a member of the Committee of Safety for Culpeper, also a vestryman and church warden of St. Mark's Parish and Justice of the Peace. He led a regiment in the Battle of Great Bridge, the first engagement of the Revolution on Virginia soil.
