About Col. John Flint, Sr.

John Flint

Colonel John Flint, son of Thomas Flint married, November 12, 1667, Mrs. Mary Oakes (probably daughter of Mr. Edward Oakes, who died at Concord, October 13, 1689, and sister of Urian Oakes, who was President of Harvard College [Mr. Bass does not explain his method of reasoning when he states that Mrs. Mary Oakes was the daughter of Edward Oakes, and the sister of Urian. The Mrs. would lead us to believe that Mary was a widow and her maiden name other than Oakes.]), who died June 9, 1690. John died December 5, 1686. He represented his native town during the years 1678, 1680 and 1682, and was Town Clerk from 1680 to 1686."

The (anonymous) individual who reissued Mr. Bass' 1860 genealogy was obviously not aware that in early colonial times, unmarried women of a certain social class were sometimes referred to as "Mrs."
