Colonel John H Hougen Sr, retired, 89, of 575 Rutledge Drive, Henderson, died Friday in a Hendersonville hospital after a brief illness. Military graveside services were held in Arlington National Cemetery.

A native of Fargo, North Dakota, he attended the University of Minnesota Law School and was a graduated of Yale Law School.

He served in the Minnesota State Senate prior to 1970. He became judge advocate for the 34th Infantry Division of the National Guard and in 1942 served with the first invading forces in North Africa, Sicily and Italy.

After World War II, he was assigned legal adviser for the U.S. Army at the Nuremberg, Germany war crimes trials. He was later assigned as US Army judge advocate for the Mediterranean Theater.

Hougen retired from active duty in 1956 and resumed private law practice in Minnesota. He became a summer resident of Hendersonville in 1975. He was winter resident of Winter Park, Florida.

He is survived by a son, Col. John Hougen Jr. of Delavan, Wisconsin; four brothers, Olaf Hougen of Madison, Wisconsin; Harold Hougen of Houston, Texas; Joel Hougen of Austin, Texas and Bernhard Hougen of Shell Knob, Missouri; three sisters, Agnes Stuen and Esther Davis of Tacoma, Washington and Laura Hanson of Evanston, Illinois; and three grandchildren.
