About Col. John Knickerbocker {K-13}
John Kernickerbacker
- Birth: unknown
- Death: 10 Nov 1786
- Burial: Lime Rock Cemetery, Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA
- Memorial ID: 15472931
John's last name requires some discussion.
William Van Alstyne wrote the definitive history of early Knickerbockers. Van Alstyne explained that he would use "Knickerbocker," regardless of many different historical spellings. Thus, Van Alstyne reported that John, son of Lawrence, died on November 10,1786, and that John was buried in Lime Rock, CT, "said to be the first burial in that cemetery." Van Alstyne stole the "first burial" wording from Malcom Rudd's 1898 book of cemetery inscriptions, but Rudd used the actual spelling "Kernickerbacker." John Kernickerbacker and John Knickerbocker are the same person.
John's will was recorded in Salisbury on Jan. 3rd, 1787, under the name "Knickerbacor", but other spellings were also used within the will and during probate.
John's will was very detailed and clearly identified his children.
