"He joined the California National Guard in 1863 as a private. He was promoted to corporal and sergeant, granted a commission in 1868 and promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain. He was promoted to Major in 1871 and by 1877 was in command of the First Regiment as a full Colonel. He retired from the military in 1880. Colonel Woodhams lived near the road that now bears his name in Santa Clara. " (findagrave)
