COLONEL RICHARD ADAMS of Richmond, Virginia; b. 17th May, 1726, in New Kent County; d. 2d August, x8oo, at Richmond. Was a member of the House of Burgesses for New Kent and Henrico Countries from 1752 to 1775; House of Dele- gates 1776-1778; Convention of 1776; Virginia Senate 1779-1782; was an ardent patriot throughout the Revolution and one of the most enterprising, public spirited, wealthy and influential citizens of Richmond; in. Loth April, 1755, Elizabeth GRIFFIN, b. 1738, d. 23d December, 18oo, dau. of Leroy and Mary Anne (BERTRAND) GRIFFIN of Richmond, Virginia, and sister of judge Cyrus GRIFFIN of Williamsburg. Colonel Richard ADAMS, his wife and many of his descendants are buried in Richmond, Virginia. Leroy GRIFFIN was High Sheriff of Richmond County, Virginia, 1734; his wife Mary Anne BERTRAND was the dau. of John BERTRAND, a Hugenot refugee, who fled from France during the persecution of Louis XIV. Leroy GRIFFIN was son of Thomas GRIFFIN, Burgess from Richmond County, Virginia, 1715, 1718- 1723-1726, who was the son of Col. Le Roy GRIFFIN, Justice of Rappahannock County, Virginia, 168o, and Colonel of Militia. His mother was Winifred CORBIN, dau. of Col. Henry CORBIN, Member of the Virginia Council 1663, Burgess 1658- 1659.

Col. Richard Adams' Family was among the early settlers of Virginia. He was the son of Richard Adams and the grandson of Eben Adams. He served as a member of the House of Burgesses between 1752 and 1775 for the counties of New Kent and Henrico. Between 1774 and 1775 He served on the Henrico County Commissioners Committee. He represented Henrico county at the 1775 Virginia Convention that declared independence from England. He served as a member of the House of Delegates Between 1776 and 1778. He served as a member of the Virginia Senate between 1779 and 1782. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Leroy and Mary Anne (Bernard) Griffin on 10 Apr. 1775. They are the grandparents of Mary Griffin Adams, who married Dr. John Minge, Jr. and whose daughter Sally Minge married General George E. Pickett.

Richard and many of his family, along with Dr. Richard Carrington, his wife Louisa, and twelve of their children and grandchildren are buried beneath or near this monument — all told, more than 60 individuals. They are all from the Adams Family Cemetery (23d & Marshall streets, Richmond) whose remains were removed to Hollywood Cemetery in December 1892. The monument inscription transcribes the court order removing the remains to Hollywood.

Richard Adams Jr. (He survived his 2 wives and 6 children) and died 9th Jan. 1817, by his will devised all his property to brothers sisters nephews & nieces in which he directed, that all the old Adams cemetery at the NE corner of 23d and Marshall Streets this city, be enlarged to 1/2 an acre, their remains, with those of Dr. Jno Adams wife Margaret, S.C. Adams & wife Catherine, Col. Geo. M. Carrington wife Margaret 4 infants & Cha's G. Pickett (her 1st husband) and their child Dr. Richard A. Carrington wife Louisa 8 children and 4 grandchildren Dr Jno. Minge wife Margaret C. & I daughter. Miss Tabitha & Elizabeth G. Adams, Mrs. Jno. Heron & 1 child, Wm Marshall wife Alice & 6 children, R.H. Adams wife son & Dr. Littleberry Carrington 1 daughter & 4 grandchildren Wm. B Randolph of Chatsworth son of Mrs. Richard Adams Jr. and many others unknown. Were removed from the "Old cemetery" to this section with all monuments head and foot stones, in compliance with an order from the Chancery Court of the City of Richmond in suit of "P.R. Carrington & wife vs. Adams heirs" and interred beneath this monument Oct 1892.
