About Col. Richard Marsham

http://www.thepeerage.com/p52868.htm#i528677 - no evidence of parentage. "Richard Marsham married Ann Calvert, daughter of Hon. Leonard Calvert. He died in 1713."

Note that there has as yet been NO definite link to any Thomas Marsham, but he is definitely NOT the son of the Norfolk Thomas Marsham, and no link can be found to any other Thomas Marsham on Geni.
Wikitree has an extensive entry, but no parents are known. http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Marsham-5. It says "The parents of Richard Marsham, and place of birth are unknown at this time. An estimated birthdate of 1638 is derived from his arrival in Maryland as an indentured servant in 1658. ... Richard immigrated to Maryland in 1658, where he served three-years of indentured service to John Horne for his transatlantic voyage. “May the 7th 1659. John Home demands Land for the transportation of himself and his Servants, Richard Marsham & John Edmondson, in 1658.”

According to the entry on Findagrave: "Birth: 1630, England; Death: 1713; Maryland, USA. Richard may have been the son of Thomas Marsham of London: Source (no longer available): http://home.comcast.net/~jacksonday/katbrent.htm "Richard Marsham was born ca. 1630, and died 1713, son of Thomas Marsham of London.(12)Thomas was registrant at the 1633-35 Visitation of London.(13) In 1658 he [Richard] came to Maryland as an indentured servant of John Horne(14) He served an indenture of three years. "In a later document he describes himself as a carpenter as well as a farmer and trader. This would explain the relatively short period, three years, of his indenture. The usual term of service for unskilled immigrants was six or more years.'(15)" Source: 12. E. F. Randolph, "Richard Marsham" 3 December 1986, in Marsham File at Tennessee State Archives, Nashville.Son of Thomas Marsham of London. Richard married 1st Katherine Brent, and 2nd as her third husband, Anne (Calvert) Brooke Brent. Katherine died in Calvert County, Maryland about 1670, leaving at least two daughters. No issue by 2nd wife Anne...." from http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=62767293

Children of Richard and Katherine Marsham

Confirmed children

Richard Marsham and his wife Katherine had two daughters. Their birth dates are estimated from their marriage dates.

  1. Sarah, born say 1665, married Basil Waring about 1680 and had two children by him during the years 1680-1683. In 1689 after Basil's death, Sarah married Rev. James Haddock.
  2. Katherine, born say 1670, married William Barton about 1688. In 1690 she married Baker brooke, II. In 1700 Katherine married Samuel Queen. 1701-1711 saw the birth of 6 children of Katherine Marsham and Samuel Queen.

Legendary Additional daughter

Numerous sources show an additional daughter, Mary, born say 1672, who became the second wife of Charles Beaven.

The absence of any mention of Mary or her six Beaven step-children in Richard Marsham's will, combined with the use of terms like "brother" or "my well beloved" rather than "husband", suggests that there was a close working or social relationship between the Marshams and Beavens, but not a family relationship.

Note however, that Mary Beaven died about 1712, her husband Charles Beaven had already died in 1699, and the children Mary helped raise were Charles Beaven's by his first marriage to Martha Paca. When Richard Marsham wrote his own will in 1713, there would be no reason to name Mary, who was already deceased, and who had produced no grandchildren for Marsham.

Mulatto Children

A Robert Pearle, mulatto slave, was born about 1685, and set free by Richard Marsham with his wife and child in his Marsham's 1720 will. There is a strong belief Robert Pearle was actually Richard Marsham's son. [22]

The 1713 will provides that Robert, aged 28 (thus born 1685) would be set free with his wife and child when he was 35 (which would be 1720). The will also specified that Robert would be obligated to build a house, a tobacco barn, and slave quarters for Richard's grandson Leonard Brooke, when Brooke reached the age of 20.

The will provides for special treatment for "my negro woman Sarah and her two daughters Beck and Sarah" that they remain on the dwelling plantation to care and mind for Richard's grandchildren, that they be provided sufficient dyet and apparel and even receive a two pound sterling annual allowance. This suggests that Sarah was Robert Pearle's mother and Beck and Sarah his half sisters.

Another "molatto" is named in the will, James, aged 17 in 1713, thus born 1696, who like Robert is to be freed at the age of 35. James may be a full brother of Robert.
