1863 – 1864: Captain of Co. H 44th NC Inf.

1864: Wounded during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House Virginia

1864: Resigned his rank of Captain of the 44th on September 12th

1865: Appointed 2nd Lt. Of Confederate Army Artillery on March 21st

Before the Antietam Campaign: A resident of Pitt County, he was commissioned Captain, Company H, 27th North Carolina on 28 September 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 16 April 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War: He resigned on account of wounds in October 1862, but re-entered service and was commissioned Captain, Company H, 44th North Carolina Infantry on 15 January 1863 and fought until wounded again at Spottsylvania Courthouse, VA on 10 May 1864. He resigned 23 December 1863.

After the War: In 1868 he moved to Wilson and was editor of the Plain Dealer. In 1876 he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives.
