About Col. Roger Thompson

1. Roger 3 THOMPSON was living in 1694 in Tividale North Britain ,Scotland. He died in New Kent Co.Va.. He was living in New Kent Co.Va.. Called Capt. later Col. was first mentioned in New Kent Co.Va, in very early 1700's. He was then well established. He may have been the Capt. R.Thompson who was a sea captian and served as a master of several vessels to Va.

3.Roger(1)Thompson,known as Captain and Colonel at various times. His dates are missing but data below will show approximate date of death. He and his family lived at Blackwell's Neck,St. Paul's Parish,New Kent County (later Hanover County) Va. He married Anne Foster, dau.of Joseph Foster of New Kent Co.Va. The first entry we have for Roger Thompson is a note in the Vestry book of Blisland Parish in 1703,when he was listed as Church Warden. He was listed in 1704 Va.Rent Rolls in New Kent Co.with 2600 acres of land.

Because he and one James Thompson were the only two Thompson families listed it is probable that the others were living with him. He was very well established according to what we can find about him, which leads this author to believe that he was a elder son of Robert or Thomas Thompson, early land patentee's of New Kent Co.Va.Bit's and pieces of data relating to his public service have been found in the Vestery Books of St.Paul's Parish, land patents of the commonwealth of Va. and English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records.Roger patented 850 more acres of land in New Kent Co.in April, 1706. He was appointed High Sheriff of New Kent Co. the same year and continued in that position for several years. He was mentioned as Justice of the Peace in 1714, 1726 and 1729.He was ordered along with his tithables to assist in clearing and mantaining the road from Pole Green's old field to Harding's store in 1717. On Feb.6,1718 he was elected Vesteryman of St.Paul's Parish,in the place of Robert Blackwell, lately dec'd,and took office the following Feb.11th.He held that position until Oct.of 1743,when Mr.Robert Jennings was elected in his place. It is thought that he must have been ill for sometime for he did not sign the Vestry Book after June 11,1737.

His grandson,George Thompson of Mercer Co.Kentucky, left a memorial in which he states that his father was Joseph Thompson who married Sarah Clairborn, and that his grandfather was Roger Thompson of Blackwell's Neck Hanover Co.Va..who mar.Miss Foster. This Joseph Thompson in his will named his brother George Thompson, and George's dau.Lucy, left property to her children, which had belong to her grandfather Roger. These two sons are the only ones who have been definitley proven as children of Roger and Anne. However we have several other probable children.

Roger was granted 2400 acres of land what was to become Louisa Co.Va.on Sept 28,1732,part of which he sold on Jan.1,1744 (which was the last entry we have for him),the deed being witnessed by George Thompson Roger Thompson Jr.and William Thompson all thought to be sons of Roger and Anne. John Thompson of Blackwell's Neck, merchant and Lucy Thompson who married Christopher James were probably also children.17 of who lived to raise families He also said the same thing about his Claiborn grandparents, which has been disproven. If the story were true there were probably a number of daughters yet missing. At any rate the early records of Hanover Co. were burned and only fragments can be found to help piece the family together.

Following are our finding.

Hanover County, Virginia, 1706-1786 Transcribed and Edited by C. G. Chamberlayne Published by The Library Board

In the index we find five entries for Capt. Roger Thompson (with the 'p'), however, for Capt. Roger Thomson (without the 'p') we find thirty-eight entries. It would seem that Thomson (without the 'p') is the predominate spelling for this surname.
