Thomas Whitmel was born 16 Sept 1688 in Charles City County, VA son of Thomas Whitmel and his wife Mary. His father died by 4 Dec 1693 and mother remarried by August 5, 1695 Arthur Kavenaugh. In the Chowan Deed Book B#1, p.104 Thomas Whitmel of Surry Co, VA buys land from Arthur Kavenaugh of Surry Co, VA on 13 July, 1715.

Thomas Whitmel was an Indian trader.

His wife Elizabeth Bryan was born 15 Sept 1694 the daughter of Lewis Bryan of Bertie County and wife Elizabeth. Thomas Whitmel died testate 24 Nov, 1735 in Bertie Co, NC. aged 47 years, two months.

Elizabeth then married Robert Hunter son of William of Chowan Co. as his second wife. Robert Hunter died testate in 1753. Robert Hunter’s children were all by his first wife. [To the contrary, One source says Robert Hunter  and Elizabeth had a son Moses ca 1737] Elizabeth Bryan Whitmel Hunter died 18 January 1753.

  • Son Thomas WHITMELL, plantation where I now live on the Kesia (Cashie) River, containing 360 acres as by reference to a deed to me by Gardner, also 320 acres on Buck Swamp, part of a survey by patent dated April 1726, half my stock of horses, etc., negroes Jupiter, Catoe, Peter and half of the stock used in Indian trade.
  • Wife Elizabeth WHITMELL, all household furniture.
  • Daughter Martha WHITMELL, £15 at her marriage or when she is of age, also half my trading stock used in the Indian trade, as well as the labor of negroes Mingoe, Bess, and Peter.
  • Second son Lewis WHITMELL, 150 acres adjacent land devised to my son Thomas and lands of John GRAY, 320 acres on Buck Swamp, being the other half of land devised to my son Thomas, also negro Bristoll, one fourth of the increase of negro Bess and one fourth part of negroes Phillis and Penney.

ROANOKE RIVER SETTLERS, 1720 Some very early settlers along Roanoke River in North Carolina, in present-day counties of Northampton, Halifax, Bertie, Martin, and Washington, in 1720; under jurisdiction of Chowan Precinct, Albemarle County, North Carolina, at that time, "Roanoac" was the 16th Century name of an American Indian village at the northern end of present-day Roanoke Island, in the eastern section of Dare County, North Carolina (near present-day town of Manteo, named for the 16th Century Indian chief, Manteo), and is the origin of the name "Roanoke" used as a place-name in Virginia and North Carolina. Roanoke River has its headwaters in Montgomery Co., Va., and flows southeast into North Carolina at the northeast corner of WarrenCo,, N.C. and continues to form the county lines between Northampton and Halifax Cos., between Halifax and Bertie Cos., between Bertie and Martin Cos., and between Bertie and Washington Cos., and finally empties into Batchelor Bay of Albemarle Sound--a total distance of around 400 miles, the last 150 in N.
