About Thomas Winslow

From "Kenelm Winslow, Volumn I" self-published in 1877 by husband and wife team, David and Frances Holton.

"Col. Thomas Winslow (Kenelm3, Kenelm2, Kenelm1) b. about 1704, Harwich, Mass.; d. 10 April 1779, "in the 75th year of his age," at Harwich. He was a physician, and resided in that part of Harwich which is now Brewster. He had the titles of colonel and judge, and was a very prominent man in the town and county. He was appointed coroner, 25 Aug. 1731; selectman, 1744; justice of the peace, 13 Sep. 1753; judge of the Court of Common Pleas, 2 June, 1758, which office he held until the Revolution, and was re-appointed after the courts were re-organized. He was published 2 Nov. 1722, and married 12 Feb. 1722-23, to his cousin Mehetabel Winslow, who was born 6 May, 1705, Rochester, Mass., dau. of Edward and Sarah (NN) Winslow, of Rochester."

Col. Thomas and wife Mehetable were first cousins...Thomas the son of Kenelm3(1668) and Mehetable the daughter of Kenelm's brother, Edward(1680-1). They married when Thomas was 18 or 19 and Mehetable was 16 or 17. The gravestones in the "Winslow Yard" at East Dennis, Mass., tell of many tragedies endured by these two. Though they had two initial sons who survived, Thomas (1723-4) and Edward (1725-6), the next seven children died as infants. Then the 10th child, Zenas was born (1741) and survived but sons #11 and #12 died at 12 days and 5 mos. respectively. So out of 12 children, only 3 sons survived to adulthood.
