Colonel William Edward Armstrong-Macdonnell was the son of William Henry Armstrong and Bridget Macdonnell.1 He married Hon. Juliana Cecilia O'Brien, daughter of Lucius O'Brien, 13th Baron of Inchiquin and Mary FitzGerald, on 20 July 1858.1 He died on 11 November 1883.1 He was also reported to have died on 14 November 1883.2

    He was given the name of William Edward Armstrong at birth.1 He held the office of High Sheriff in 1853.1 In 1858 his name was legally changed to Colonel William Edward Armstrong-Macdonnell when he assumed the additional surname and arms of Macdonnell, (his mother's surname), by Royal Licence.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the Clare Militia.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)1 He lived at New Hall, Ennis, County Clare, Ireland.1
