Col. Gilbert Hathaway, of LaPorte, commanded the 73rd Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. The regiment originally included hundreds of men from Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties who fought in the war's western theater, largely in Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. Hathaway died in battle on May 2, 1863, while his regiment was chasing infamous Confederate Cavalry Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's troops in Blount County, Ala., during a military operation known as Streight's Raid.
