Colonel Buford was an Eagle Scout with the All Eagle Patrol of Troop 5 in Richmond, Virginia and a graduate of Virginia Military Institute (Class of 1938). He served his country in World War II with Patton's 3rd Army from the Normandy landings through the Battle of the Bulge and on into Germany finishing his wartime service as a tank battalion commander. Colonel Buford also served his country as a Military Attache during the French Indochina War, acting as, among other things, a military observer in the City of Dien Bien Phu during the siege of that city. Other assignments included posts as Assistant Military Attache to the French Republic and Military Attache to the Republic of Tunisia. His honors included the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit and the Master Parachutist badge. He was a member of the Army-Navy Club, the Country Club of Virginia and the United States Horse Cavalry Association.
