About Columbus Pembroke Carter
Son of Jonathan 2nd and Mary Ann (Leonard) Carter. Born in Montville February 22, 1839. died in Montville October 13, 1924. On April 22, 1869 married Clara A. Sproul, daughter of John and Abigail (Thompson) Sproul. Born September 18, 1844, died July 31, 1921. He served as a volunteer in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. He was Second Lieutenant of Company 1, Fourteenth Maine Regiment. After the loss of the Captain and the First Lieutenant, he served as commander of the company for the duration of the war. They lived on a farm in Montville. They had two sons, Ralph Merton and George Crosby.
