Graff-Reinette rebel. Sentenced to death. Died in prison.

1779 - 1881:
The Amaxhosa drove large herds of their cattle across the border in search of grazing. Clashes between them and border farmers took place and by the end of 1779 many farmers had abandoned their farms on the Fish and Bushmans rivers. After two farmer's commandos organised in 1779 and 1780 to follow the Amaxhosa into their own country, Adriaan van Jaarsveld was instructed to implement the establishment of the eastern border of the Colony (Greater Fish and Bushman's Rivers) by enforcing a relocation of all Amaxhosa chiefdoms living to the west of the Greater Fish River. Under the pretence of bringing the Mdange a gift of goodwill Van Jaarsveld ordered his commando to attack the unsuspecting and unarmed Mdange, killing many. Other chiefdoms wre similarly attacked. In addition to defeating the Amaxhosa, Van Jaarsveld, contrary to his instructions, netted almost 6 000 head of cattle and divided them amongst the members of the commando and other border farmers who had suffered losses during raids by the Amaxhosa. Numbers for other livestock are not known (1)

"The British authority continued until 1799 when the burghers again rose in revolt freeing Commandant Adriaan van Jaarsveld from prison, who had served as the President of the Graaff-Reinet “War Council.” The rebellion was supressed by General Thomas Vandeleur and the ringleaders including van Jaarsveld and Marthinis Prinsloo were sentenced to death in Cape Town whilst a number of the other rebels were sentenced to terms of imprisonment, banishment or flogging. Van Jaarsveld died in custody in the Castle in Cape Town in 1803." https://www.karoo-southafrica.com/camdeboo/graaff-reinet/history-of...
