About Commander Bryan Gouthwaite Scurfield DSO, OBE, AM

Commander Bryan Gouthwaite Scurfield, DSO., OBE. commanded HMS Hunter as it was hit off the coast of Almeria in 1937 in connection with the Spanish Civil War and was awarded the Albert Medal for sea gallantry. He was awarded the DSO. and OBE. during WWII for his involvement in the Malta Convoy

On 15 June 1942 HMS Bedouin was sunk by a torpedo. Scurfield was one of 213 survivors picked up and imprisoned in Italy; following the Italian surrender in July 1943 Scurfield was transferred to Germany and imprisoned near Coblenz. He was mortally wounded (by Allied fighters) while being evacuated from his prison camp on 11 April 1945.
