About Commodore Oliver Bowen

Oliver Bowen was a Revolutionary War naval hero. He was the first commodore of the Georgia navy. His capture of the Phillippa, laden with gun powder, was the first capture made by any order of any congress in America.

He was successful in the early days of the revolutionary war in seizing a large quantity of powder stored on Tybee Island, near Savannah.

Oliver was a member of the Sons of Liberty and a member of the provincial congress.

After the war he served as a United States Federal Marshall in Chatham County, Georgia.
