About Conrad Sachs
"Conrad Sachs, Cooper of New Hope, married in Berlin March 09, 1856 to Rosina Schlegel of Waterloo Village" (Paster Bindemann's Records - Registry of Marriages 1835-1864).
Three Sachs families moved to New Hope from the village of Schnellmannshausen. Conrad came with his parents and sister in 1848. While Conrads parents, sister and brother-in-law homesteaded in Carrick during the 1850's, Conrad stayed back in New Hope (Hespeler) and learned the trade of Cooper in Jacob Roos's Cooper Shop. Records show that he worked there from 1854 until 1862. In 1862 he moved with his family to Carrick.
Conrad took over his father's claim in Carrick taking the east 50 acres of lot 18 concession11, and registered it with the Crown in 1863. His brother in-law settled on the west half of the lot, later selling this land and moving to Normanby Township.
The Schlegel's came to Canada from the German village of Sonneborn in 1850. They lived in Waterloo Village for a few years before moving to Carrick. Both sets of parents are buried at the Church at St. John's in Carrick.
