Biography

Constance (Unknown) was born about 1600, probably in England.[1] Her parents and maiden name are unknown.

Marriages

Constance married twice.

She married probably at Tenterden, Kent, England, as her first, to William Robinson.[2] William Robinson's will was written on 26 June 1625 and proved on 3 June 1626.[2]

She married on 22 Jan 1626/7 at Tenterden, Kent, England, as her 2nd, and as his first, to Jonas Austin.[1] After the death of Constance, Jonas married, as his 2nd, to Frances (Unknown) Hill, the widow of John Hill of Dorchester.[1]

The passenger list of the ship Hercules, which sailed from Sandwich, England to Massachusetts in 1634 lists: "JONAS AUSTEN of Tenterden and CONSTANCE his wife Four children."[3]

If there were four children on board with the Austins, one does not seem to be recorded anywhere. The third was Lydia Robinson, the daughter of Constance by her first husband.[1]

Associations

No relationship has been found between Constance or Jonas with Nathaniel Tilden, who was also from Tenterden, Kent, and witnessed the will of William Robinson, but Nathaniel and Jonas certainly knew each other.[1] The Tilden family also sailed aboard the Hercules.

Death and Legacy

She passed away on 22 April 1667 in Taunton, Plymouth Colony (later Massachusetts).[1]

Research Notes

Savage entertains, but does not wholly accept, that son, Jonas, Jr., married the widow of John Hill (actually the father, Jonas, Sr. married Frances (Unknown) Hill, the widow of John Hill).[1] Pope confounds Jonas Austin, Sr with Jonas Austin Jr.[1]
