Of Constance Lodge Gardner Williams

Constance Davis Lodge was a beloved daughter of distinguished American statesman and conservative politician, Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr. (b May 12, 1850 Boston, MA - Nov 9, 1924 Cambridge, MA) and the former Anna Cabot Mills Davis (b Jun 15, 1851 MA - d Sep 27, 1915 MA) both Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA. Anna Cabot Mills Davis was the daughter of Admiral Charles Henry Davis. Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr. and Anna Cabot Mills Davis were married Jun 11, 1890. Henry Cabot Lodge represented Massachusetts in the U. S. House of Representative from 1887 to 1893, and in the U.S. Senate from 1893 to 1924. Constance Davis Lodge had two siblings George Cabot Lodge, noted poet, and John Ellerton Lodge, an art curator.

Augustus Peabody Gardner (b Nov 6, 1865 Boston, MA - d Jan 14, 1918 Camp Wheeler, GA) married Constance Davis Lodge on Jun 15, 1892. They became the parents of only one child, a daughter whom they adored, Constance Gardner (b Oct 7, 1894 MA - d Feb 8, 1941). Augustus Peabody Gardner was born to affluent parents Joseph Gardner and the former Harriet Sears Armory. His mother died shortly after he was born. Joseph Gardner, his father died and Joseph's brother financier John "Jack" Gardner and his wife Isabelle Gardner loved, adopted, reared and educated the three boys.

Augustuus Peabody Gardner served in the United States Congress representing the 6th district of Massachusetts for 16 years, from 1901 - 1917. He resigned his office to serve: Major US Army (National Guard) during World War I, being the first Congressman to join. He sucuumbed to pneumonia and died at Camp Wheeler, Georgia.

The government wanted to honor him with a state funeral at the National Cadedral and procession in Washington, D.C., but his beloved wife Constance refused. She chose their small church in Washington to have his funeral and memorial service, saying this was to honor her husband the man.

Constance (Lodge) Gardner later married Brig. General Charles Clarence Williams in 1923. They were married for 25 years until June 27, 1948, when Constance passed away. They originally were to both be buried in this cemetery for he had a headstone prepared here.
